Kid Care Report: Day care on Mayport Road cited for seven violations

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two local day cares land on the Action News Jax Kid Care report — one for a flawless inspection report, the other cited by the Department of Children and Families for violations. Action News Jax anchor Letisha Bereola visited one the centers to see if it’s back in compliance.

Right Start Early Learning Center off Mayport Road was cited for seven violations during a recent visit by a state inspector.

Three of them were Class 2 violations, which could pose a threat to the health and safety of a child. The others were Class 3, which pose a low risk of harm to kids, according to state guidelines.

The Class 2 violations were for being out of ratio, broken play equipment and an employee working without a valid background check — there was a gap in employment, according to the report.

The Class 3 violations were for training issues, record keeping and failing to keep all of the past violations posted for a full year. No one came to the door when Bereola stopped by. So she called while still in the parking lot. During that time, someone from the center called the Action News Jax newsroom and asked Bereola to leave and not come back.

The inspection report notes, all the violations were corrected on the spot.

The second day care in this week’s Kid Care Report is Episcopal Children’s Services Northside Early Head Start in Moncrief. Since DCF started keeping online records in 2017 this day care has never had a violation — and its first visit in 2020 was violation-free. Two day cares in this week’s Kid Care Report — one missed the mark, the other made the grade.
