Manatee and calf freed after being stuck under dock on Ortega River

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A mother manatee and her calf were set free after they were stuck under a dock on the Ortega River at Timuquana Road, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

The manatees and her calf got stuck to the dock due to the tracking device on the manatees.

Thankfully FWC was able to quickly dislodge the tag from the dock. They told Action News Jax reporter Ben Becker the following, “Our Law enforcement was present and able to dislodge tag from the dock. There is a breakaway system too.”

The manatees and her calf were set free back into the river.
