MOSH unveils new exhibit inspired by classic, deep-sea tale ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Starting Saturday, you can take a ‘Voyage to the Deep’ at the Museum of Science and History (MOSH) as it welcomes a new exhibit inspired by the Jules Verne novel, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

An underwater tale more than 150 years old is calling all adventurers in Jacksonville to dive in.

“[It is] directly based off of Jules Verne’s novel ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,’” said Dr. Anthony Mortimer, Director of Curatorial Services at the Museum of Science and History (MOSH).

You can go deep-sea exploring right at MOSH.

“It’s basically bringing our book lesson to life,” said Chantel Beidleman.

The mom of two homeschools her children, 8-year-old Harvey and 6-year-old Simone.

During Wednesday’s media preview, her kids got to enjoy some hands-on experiences learning about the real subaquatic world the sci-fi classic story is based on.

“They’re like, ‘Why is this so small, and why is this here and why is that there,’ and they’re just so fascinated and I feel like I’m right along with them,” she said.

The interactive exhibit will give you a feel for what life was like living inside a submarine, and it’s even complete with a top deck.

“Even if [visitors] are not familiar with the story at all, they’ll get some fun interactives on how a submarine works, things that you might expect to see under the ocean: see and hear,” Mortimer pointed out.

Kids will even have the chance to get behind the helm, in a simulated nautical journey.

“I learned that you have to have two people driving it,” Harvey pointed out right after he tried steering it alongside his sister.

And that will also teach these new sailors a few life lessons along the way.

“It takes teamwork,” Mortimer said.

The exhibit will officially open to the general public on Saturday and it’ll remain at MOSH until January 8.

“The fantasy level of it and the educational level of it, was just an overall great experience,” Beidleman said.

Tickets are $17.95 for adults and $14.95 for students, seniors (55+), military service members, and children (between three and 12 years old). MOSH members and children under two years old get in for free.
