One man and dog killed in Arlington house fire

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Neighbors in Arlington are mourning the loss of a man and a dog after an early morning house fire claimed their lives on Monday.

Ferrell Carden remembers the frightening moments he saw a fire erupting on Wayland Street just a few houses down outside his home.

“It was bellowing smoke out of the roof and it was very thick and dark and it just looked like the house was totally consumed in fire,” Carden said.

He and his daughter Ragan told Action News Jax the home belonged to their friend Ryan Mailey.

“He was a single young man, probably about 36 years old and his mother had just passed a month ago,” Carden said.

Firefighters said they were call out to the home just after 6:30 a.m. for heavy smoke coming from the kitchen.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said a neighbor who called 911 noticed a car in the driveway and tried banging on the door, but when firefighters got inside, it was too late.

The victim and a dog were both killed in the fire and another dog was rushed to a local vet.

The Jacksonville Sheriff Office’s homicide unit was also called out to investigate. JFRD said it’s routine when someone is killed in fire.

Action News Jax saw K9s searching the property and learned this wasn’t the first time police have been called out to the home.

According to JSO, there’s been at least 11 calls for service within the last 15 months.

Ragan told Action News Jax reporter Alicia Tarancon that her neighbor will be missed.

“He was just a nice guy, just a real nice guy. Always had a real big heart,” Ragan said.

The state fire marshal is also investigating the cause of the fire.

Action News Jax contacted them to see if they could provide an update and we’re still waiting to hear back.
