Physical, mental health concern as kids go back to school

The start of the school year is already stressful for kids and creates anxiety. Parents should discuss the first day with them. Not just talking about the ‘new norm’ about ask them about their new teacher, new friends, new school, etc.

With younger kids, it’s important that they feel safe. So talk about the importance of following the rules (i.e. wearing a mask, social distancing, and handwashing) and make sure they know that’s to keep them safe.

Talk to younger kids differently than the older ones. Talk to a teenager about how this is tough, but try to look at the positive and the things they can still do rather than what they can’t do.

Duval County Schools has a partnership with therapists across the region. Theresa says through that partnership, almost every school has an assigned therapist if there’s one needed.
