JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Our community has donated thousands of books to Tenikka’s Book for Kids. Since the book drive started four years ago, local business San Marco Books and More has stepped up to support the event.
Owner Desiree Bailey said she felt compelled to be a partner from the start, because she knows how important it is for children to read.
“I was an avid reader when I was little. I was the one that when my parents said ‘goodnight, go to bed,’ I would sneak under there with my flashlight and I would keep reading because I wasn’t ready to be done,” Bailey said.
“I think there’s something magical about reading a book, whether it takes you away or you learn something new and you go on from that book. So the more books we can get for kids, I think it’s a great idea.”
Tenikka’s Books for Kids went virtual this year because of the pandemic, encouraging people to buy books online. So, Bailey created a special webpage (http://www.bit.ly/tenikka) just for our book drive, so people can shop from a wish list handpicked by Jacksonville Library staff.
Bailey said they can customize orders around any budget or book quantity that someone wants to buy.
Bailey also said, “If they still want to order any book, like the favorite book that they had, they can add that. As long as there’s a note in there ‘For Tenikka,’ we will add it to the donation. We will add it to the box and everything goes, so there’s really no limit to what we can do.”
Your donation to Tenikka’s Books for Kids helps give the gift of reading, while also giving a boost to a local small business still navigating the impact of the pandemic.
“My parents have owned the store for a little over 20 years. I have to think about seven or eight stores have closed just in that time, if not more, that were locally, independently owned. So everything you can do makes such a difference,” Bailey said.
Bailey says her bookstore will also make a financial donation to the Jacksonville Library Foundation for summer learning. You can find a link to buy books to donate from San Marco Books and More here: http://www.bit.ly/tenikka
