“This major event will bring 25 of the world’s greatest skateboarding athletes and thousands of fans to our city,” said Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry.

Paul Rodriguez, a household name in the sport, will be competing.

He helped make the announcement, and says he’s also here to give skateboarders the recognition they deserve.

“I feel like skateboarders are just as elite of athletes as any other mainstream sport that we have out there,” Rodriguez said. “And it’s important for me to see our culture get that kind of pedestal that I believe we deserve.”

“That’s cool, that’s sick. You know, he’s Paul Rodriguez. He’s a legend,” said 16-year-old Riley Lewis, who can’t believe the event is coming here.

“Usually they hold [these events] in like California, or something like that, big major cities, but it’s very nice that they’re doing it here,” he said.

The championship will bring all street skating obstacles on a major scale, to fill the Riverfront Plaza space in November.

The course will span 8,000 square feet and feature some tricks you probably haven’t seen before.

“It’s going to be the most cutting-edge elite tricks. I can’t even tell you what’s going to happen to be honest,” Rodriguez said. “The talent that’s out there today, these young guys are really, really pushing the bar.”

“I will promise you, it will be the best street skate you will see in competition form,” he emphasized.

Riley says he’ll be checking out all this talent in-person.

“It takes a lot of skill of course, a lot of balance, a lot of practice, just for them to combine tricks,” Lewis said.

“I’m very excited, actually!”
