Man killed in officer-involved shooting in Arlington Hills area

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office had a large police presence on Voltaire Court East off Fort Caroline Road in the Arlington Hills area following an officer-involved shooting in the area Sunday night.

The sheriff’s office said a woman told police she and her boyfriend were at a home and got into an argument when he hit her and fired a shot at a couch. She was able to leave the home and call 911, JSO said.

When police arrived to the area, they asked the man to come outside of the home. “After continued efforts to do so, the suspect exited the residence, approached the officers, and when he got close to the officers, he reached into his right rear pocket where there was a firearm," JSO Chief T.K. Waters said. “The officers at that point used their service weapons and struck the suspect killing him at the scene.”

Six police officers were involved in the shooting. JSO said no officers were hurt. The man killed was identified as Phillippe Periera and is said to be in his mid-40s.

The officers were not involved in any other officer-involved shooting incidents prior to this, JSO said.

The officers were placed on administrative leave while the state attorney’s office investigates, per standard JSO policy.

A neighbor who lives on Voltaire Court West called Action News Jax and said they heard gunshots and police helicopters and sirens earlier Sunday night.
