Two-day vaccine event to honor Dr. Leon Haley wraps up in downtown Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Thursday marked the conclusion of a two-day, free COVID-19 vaccine event in the memory of the late Dr. Leon Haley at JEA headquarters in downtown Jacksonville.

Haley was the CEO of UF Health Jacksonville, and a JEA board member.

Before he died on July 24 in a jet ski accident, he was on a mission of helping as many people as possible get the coronavirus vaccine.

Vernice Jones was the first person in line to get her very first Pfizer dose on Thursday.

She says she’d been trying to find an appointment with no luck, so she stopped in her tracks when she heard Action News Jax announce the event during our morning newscast.

“I saw it on your channel,” Jones said. “I was watching the news this morning and I was like, ‘That message must be for me, that’s confirmation.’”

“I came straight over,” she said.

There was a previous event at JEA headquarters to honor Haley on August 5; 143 people got vaccinated then.

And ever since JTA’s Wellness on Wheels buses hit the road in March, they’ve helped administer nearly 10,000 vaccine doses.

Up until recently, Jones didn’t think she’d be part of those stats.

She had her doubts, even sharing those with U.S. Representative Charlie Crist and State Senator Audrey Gibson who came to support the event.

“My hesitancy was, I feel personally that it was not a lot of information or research on it for me,” she told them both on the bus while she was waiting to get the vaccine.

Her turning point, however, was when her 16-year-old daughter got her vaccine a week ago.

“Neither of us need to be sick because I am the primary caretaker,” she explained. “Whatever happens, we go through it together.”

“[Jones] understood the mutation that it’s not the same COVID that it was when it started, it’s mutated and she cares about her family,” Gibson said.

Now, Jones has one dose down, one to go.
