Exclusive: Local mom recounts staring down barrel of gun during carjacking

A Jacksonville mom carjacked at gunpoint said she has to have counseling and she’s barely sleeping, days after being forced to stare down the barrel of a gun when she was just trying to leave for work.

“He was standing there with a gun pointed at me with a hoodie over his head saying, ‘Get out!” said carjacking victim Eugena Jones.

On Monday, she shared her story exclusively with Action News Jax in hopes no one else becomes a victim.

Last Wednesday, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said Jones was attacked by strangers.

“I’m blessed to be here, because it could’ve went bad,” Jones said.

Jones said it happened around 5 a.m. at the Caroline Square Apartments on Fort Caroline Road as she was just trying to head to her first of three jobs.

“I saw a car coming from the side street, and they turned behind my car and stopped. But I didn’t think anything of it,” Jones said.

Jones said next thing she knew, she was staring down the barrel of a gun as she sat in her car.

“I saw the gun and I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ I just threw up my hands and said, ‘Don’t hurt me. I’m just trying to go to work.’ And I just walked off,” Jones said.

She said while she was walking away, she was still fearing for her life.

“I was just praying that they don’t shoot me in my back,” Jones said. “I hid like under here, right here,” Jones said, showing Action News Jax the staircase near her apartment. “This is where I called 911,” Jones said.

Jones showed Action News Jax the JSO arrest report, which states that the next day, officers spotted Jones’ car at a westside gas station.

JSO arrested 18-year-olds Deonte Richardson and Doneyzia Teague, as well as Christian King, 26.

On Monday, all three faced charges for being in a stolen car, not for the carjacking.

Action News Jax has requested their mug shots from JSO.

For Jones, she wants people to hear her story and know to be aware of their surroundings and always ready for anything.

“You think it’ll go away anytime soon?” Action News Jax reporter Russell Colburn asked.

“I don’t think so. It’ll always be there,” Jones said. “It’ll always be there.”
