Family questioning security at Brookdale Crown Point following theft of patient's credit cards

A local family is questioning the security at an assisted living facility after their 90-year-old father fell victim to theft and fraud.

The family believes the theft happened at Brookdale Crown Point. JSO said the case is still being investigated.

Action News Jax spoke to the victim’s daughter, who is an employee at Action News Jax, and she claims someone racked up nearly $8,000 in charges on her father’s credit cards.

Her father is a resident at Brookdale Crown Point which cares for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

The only reason the victim’s daughter learned something was amiss was thanks to a fraud alert she received from VyStar Credit Union.

She tells us a Walmart card and an American Express were also taken from his wallet and used in stores throughout Jacksonville.

In one instance, the police report detailed a more than $1,300 purchase at a Wal-Mart.

The victim’s daughter said the suspect purchased tires and went to a local beauty supply store.

That’s where she was able to get surveillance images of a woman the merchant said used her dad’s card.

We shared the photos with Brookdale. A spokesperson confirmed JSO also shared the same photos with them.

In a statement, Brookdale’s spokesperson Heather Hunter said:

“We take situations like this very seriously and have been cooperating with the police on the investigation as soon as we heard what happened. They shared the same images you have, with us and we were able to confirm with them that this person is not an associate of ours.

"We will continue to cooperate with them however needed in their investigation, as our residents’ security and wellbeing is a vital part of our every day mission and we hope for a resolution for the resident.

We direct you to them for any further questions about the incident."

Some of the money is being reimbursed by the credit card companies but the family worries this could happen again to another vulnerable patient.

JSO spokesperson Melissa Bujeda would not confirm if the person pictured is considered a suspect or person of interest.
