Family wants answers in Jerry Brown unsolved murder case

There have been nearly 100 murder cases in Jacksonville in 2018.

And while Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office investigators are still working

more than half of these cases, some families are beginning to lose hope.

Action News Jax Courtney Cole reached out to JSO to figure out why some cases remain unsolved for prolonged periods of time.

"When you think of him, it makes you smile but then you cry at the same time because he was such a joy to every single person he ever met."

Chevie Green is talking about her cousin Jerry Brown.

"He touched so many lives. He was a good kid, never any trouble,” Green told Action News Jax.

Brown was only 22 years old when someone shot him in 2016.

Green says he was leaving his aunt’s house when it happened.

"He sat in the driveway to make phone calls, to check Instagram...while he was doing that someone murdered him,” Green said.

To this very day, Green says the family doesn't know who murdered him.

“Right now, no justice, no peace. Our family is not at peace. We’re not the same. A void, a huge void,” said Green.

Green said she wonders if the crime JSO deals with on a day-to-day basis—hinders progress in Brown’s case.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Murder Data, there have been 83 murders in Jacksonville in 2018.

Action News Jax counted 48 of those cases that still remain open.

Action News Jax crime expert Ken Jefferson says the large number is due to a number of factors:

"Contributing factors are lack of evidence, lack of cooperation sometimes. Sometimes they may find a victim and have no clues at all. They have to start from scratch."

Jefferson and Green encourage anyone with any information about an open case to break the code of silence and speak up.

"Please, someone talk, please. A tip, anything. We have nothing,” said Green.
