FDLE to investigate Nassau deputy who killed driver

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said Saturday they are investigating the officers use of force in the incident Friday afternoon when a Nassau deputy shot a driver who was ramming into another car.

FDLE said they will get with the state attorney's office to determine what charges, if any, would be filed.

Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper says there will likely not be any updates on the names of those who were involved until Monday.

The deputy who fired his gun has been with the Sheriff’s Office for six years and is now on administrative leave.

Leeper said a car was about to ram into another car for a third time when a deputy pulled out his gun and shot and killed the driver.

"He was in fear of other three people in that vehicle. He thought they were going to get hurt," Leeper said.

It started out on the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge when a gray car hit another car in traffic and then drove off.

The driver whose car got hit drove after the other vehicle and followed him onto Oneil Scott Road.

“There were about 12 different cars flooring it down that way," neighbor James Woolard said.

Leeper said the deputy tried to get the driver out of the car, but he refused and that’s when the deputy fired his gun.

"It's concerning because you hear of these things way off, but you never know of them coming in your own neighborhood,” neighbor Maybelle Kirkland-Brown said.

The sheriff is not releasing the deputy’s name.

The other people in the victim’s vehicle were not hurt.
