Nassau County father killed in motorcycle crash

Family and friends are mourning a Fernandina Beach father killed in a motorcycle crash.

Gordon Songer, 32, was killed after a car pulled out in front of his motorcycle at U.S. 17 at Pages Dairy Road Monday morning, troopers said.

He was ejected, then hit by another car, according to FHP.

His family said he leaves behind a fiancée, 7-year-old son and 23-year-old stepson.

Scott Pitts lives across the street from where the crash occurred. He said he heard it while he was waiting for his ride to work. He called 911 around 6:20 a.m.

“I heard the guy on the motorcycle hit on the gas real hard and changed a few gears,” Pitts said. “Then seen him hit the side of the van. When he hit the van he bounced off. When I ran to him, a car driving northbound to southbound hit him.”

Pitts and a couple other people who ran over said they used a tire jack to lift the car off of the victim.

“We got the car up the best we could and called 911,” Pitts said “They got here within a few minutes and told us there was nothing he could do by the time we could do anything.”

A Gofundme page has been started to support Songer's family during this time.

“It’s hard to get something like that out of your head,” Pitts said. “But there was a lot of good people out that helped and brought jacks over there and trying to do whatever until we realized there was nothing nobody can do. So a lot of good people coming together to try and help this man out.”

Charges are pending in the crash, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
