FHP: 14-year-old hit, killed by truck

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — A teenager was hit and killed by a truck in Putnam County Sunday night.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened in the Stokes Landing Road at Kid Lane around 9 p.m. Investigators said the boy was jogging with his 12-year-old sister at the time of the crash.

The driver, 50-year-old Alan Sherman Ward of Palatka, turned himself in just after 1:30 a.m. Monday. FHP said the man's wife drove him to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

The investigators have also recovered the 2002 Dodge Ram work truck suspected in the deadly crash, which had a broken driver's side mirror.

The two were jogging south on Stokes Landing Road when the driver swerved for unknown reasons and hit the boy, said troopers. FHP said a 14-year-old Robert Wise was killed instantly and found dead at the scene.

"I just saw a big truck coming and it just hit him out of nowhere," said Alexis Wise, Robert's sister. "Threw him 30 feet at least, and (I) just left him."

The victim's sister got her grandmother, who then called 911. Troopers said other people called for help too.

"She called me from behind a tree because she was afraid he'd come back. I just flew up here and nobody was here yet. He was just laying there," said Cecily Ramey, victim's grandmother.

The man is cooperating with investigators. Troopers said he didn't think he killed someone.
