Man dies after wrong-way crash on I-95 in Jacksonville

Friday, loved ones told Action News Jax they were still processing the wrong way crash that claimed the life of Nicholas Reid, 22.

Florida Highway Patrol said Reid was in the passenger seat when Haven Vaughn, 19, driving a Nissan, ran into another car on I-95 early Friday morning.

Wonda Roberts explained her son, Jamal, was hit head-on by the Nissan.

She described, “If I had seen the photos before I knew he was alright I probably would have been devastated. I might have wouldn’t have made it to the hospital.”

Troopers said they were working to figure out how Vaughn ended up driving the wrong way on the interstate despite concrete barriers.

Investigators weren’t ruling out alcohol as a factor.

Roberts said she’s amazed her son made it out alive.

“I had just lost my daughter in 2014,” she explained, “I was just so thankful I could just hold him because I didn’t get that opportunity with my daughter.”

She said she understands the loss Reid’s family is experiencing.

"I feel so bad for the person that lost his life and his family. I really, really do,” Roberts said.

According to FHP charges were pending in the case as of Friday.

A spokesperson for the agency said it could take between three months to a year before the investigation is complete.
