Florida’s gas tax holiday directly impacts livelihood for some

Florida’s new gas tax holiday is now in effect, and cheaper gas benefits some people more than others.

If you’ve got your own transportation, cheaper gas means a little more money in the bank. But for some workers, cheaper gas directly affects their livelihood.

Those affected include ride-sharing drivers, first responders, farmers and others. Many of these people have jobs that rely on gas.

“Uber Eats, Door-dash food delivery and Amazon Flex,” ride-sharing driver Ian Love said.

The only catch to his job is that, none of these companies reimburse him for gas.

“It really stinks because you feel like you’re working and then all the money you’ve made in a certain day, it’s like minus $30 for the gas cost,” Love said.

But with Florida’s Motor Fuel Tax Relief Act of 2022 making gas cheaper this month, Love said, “Any savings is more of a profit margin for me.”

“Typically, when you fill up, how much would it cost to fill up your tank? It takes a lot, maybe $50 because I have a big tank,” says Jacksonville resident Alan Nguyen.

Alan Nguyen is a college student. He says although he doesn’t depend on gas for a living, it still impacts him.

“It helps my wallet, it makes it cheaper, I can spend more on food if I need to,” Nguyen said.

The gas tax holiday went into effect on Oct.1. Drivers will get a 25-cent rebate per gallon of gasoline. In May, Florida hit a record high of $4.49 per gallon of gas. According to AAA, Florida’s current average gas price is $3.22. That’s 33 cents lower than last month ($3.55), but still 17 cents higher than last year.

Love tells me that ride-sharing jobs have been a big help to him. He relies on Amazon deliveries heavily during the holidays, and uses works for Uber Eats and Door dash in the evenings, when a lot of people are looking to sit down for dinner.
