GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. - A Glynn County man was arrested on suspicion of cruelty to animals Tuesday after he allegedly left a puppy in his hot car for nearly an hour, according to a police report.

A Glynn County deputy responded to an animal welfare check Tuesday morning after a concerned citizen noticed a puppy locked inside a crate in a car with the windows barely rolled down at a Walmart parking lot, the report said.

According to the report, when the officer found the car, he saw that all four windows were rolled down about one inch and there was a brindle pit bull mix puppy in a wire crate that was "panting and whimpering."

As the deputy called Glynn County Animal Control, the owner, Vertice Green, walked up to the car and told the officer it was his vehicle.

Green told the deputy he was inside Walmart for "not even five minutes." The officer attempted to explain to Green the danger he put the dog in multiple times, but Green said, "I don't need to hear this," and refused to listen to the officer, according to the report.

Green was arrested for animal cruelty and the police officer put the puppy in his cruiser in the air conditioning while waiting for Animal Control.

Walmart security camera footage showed Green parking his car at 10:10 a.m. and the police report notes that he returned to his car at 11 a.m.

"Green was lucky, because being in the hot car for that long could have killed the puppy," Glynn County Animal Control Officer Holland said.

Temperatures were around 85 degrees Tuesday morning.
