Kiefer Washburn

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville senior nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy by U.S. Rep. Al Lawson has been appointed to the military academy.

Kiefer M. Washburn, a senior at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville, received an offer of appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, according to a release from the office of Rep. Lawson, who serves Florida's 5th Congressional District.

“Kiefer is a dedicated student whose passion for service will inspire those around him,” Rep. Lawson said in the release. “His ambition, drive, and desire to serve our country is admirable and will help us build stronger communities. I was honored to nominate him for acceptance and wish him continued success.”

Kiefer volunteers at the Jacksonville Humane Society and is the founder and president of Warriors Wings, a community service organization at his high school. He has also served as the senior captain for the cross country and crew teams. Kiefer holds a 3.56 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society.

“I have always felt extremely lucky and proud to have grown up in the United States,” Washburn said. “I have volunteered with different organizations throughout high school, and this appointment will give me the opportunity to give back to my country. I am thankful to Congressman Lawson for his nomination.”

Rep. Lawson may nominate up to 10 students each year to the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. While a nomination will not guarantee acceptance into one of these academies, it is required as part of the applicant’s submission packet. Those selected to attend a service academy must commit to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.
