Jacksonville Jaguars set up ballot drop box in Lot J of TIAA Bank Field

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Monday was the first day for Duval County voters to drop their mail-in ballots off at a drop box set up outside TIAA Bank Field.

Turnout started slow at the site in Lot J.

Voter Darnell Harris told Action News Jax, “I have a couple ballots for my in-laws. I was going to take them downtown but this was a whole lot easier.”

He said the favor took less than five minutes.

“It was easy in, and easy out,” Harris said.

Action News Jax reported in September when the Jaguars released a public service announcement emphasizing the importance of voting.

The ad and ballot collection box is part of the team’s “Get in the Game” campaign.

Duval Supervisor of Elections Mike Hogan said the 21st collection location helps, as they’re seeing record early voting numbers.

As of Sunday, more than 148,000 in Duval County had voted at polling locations in the week since the early voting started.

According to Hogan, that is more than the 99,745 ballots they received in the entire 14-day period during the 2016 election.

“It’s going to be a lot easier to drive through here than any of our early voting sites,” Hogan said.

Harris described it as a quick alternative that allowed more people to weigh in on an important decision.

“It’s going to change America one way or the other,” Harris said.

The drop box is open from 7 a.m. to 7p.m. through Sunday, Nov. 1.

Two poll workers are onsite securing the box, which is chained to the ground.
