Jacksonville murder suspect released on reduced bond, victim’s mother outraged

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In January 2019, Trevor Gray was shot and killed while at a stoplight on St. John’s Bluff on Jacksonville’s Southside.

Police say Gray and two others got into an altercation with Izhaan Scott at a gas station.

Police say Scott followed Gray’s truck before shooting into it.

Gray’s mother, Tina Gray, is left to carry the heavy burden of his death.

“To lose your child… you spend your life protecting your baby and when they’re gone, they just shouldn’t go before you.” Gray said.

Scott was charged in Gray’s second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder for the two others in the truck.

He has since been released on bond.

A judge recently granted Scott a bond reduction, from $500,000 to $110,000.

The state tried to have him held on no bond, but the judge denied it, Scott only had to put up 10 percent of that.

Action News Jax Law and Safety Expert Dale Carson said the bond reduction is not the norm when it comes to a murder case.

“It is rare for the charges, but again an arrest for a given charge doesn’t mean a prosecution for a given charge.” Carson said.

In the 4th Judicial Circuit the judge has absolute power deciding how much you have to pay to get out of jail.

Other circuits in Florida have bond guidelines, but that’s not the case in the 4th district.

Carson says Jacksonville has significantly higher bonds and in many cases people can’t pay them and end up in jail longer.
