JSO: Jabar Gaffney denied girlfriend's report he threatened to shoot himself

A new police record reveals a report of suicidal threats, sleeping pills and a gun sparked a SWAT situation involving a former NFL wide receiver.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said Jabar Gaffney surrendered to officers at his Southside home on Friday, just inside the gated Highland Glen neighborhood off Beach Boulevard.

The JSO incident report said Gaffney’s girlfriend reported she saw him taking pills while he had a gun when they were FaceTiming.

The girlfriend told JSO the former Raines High School, University of Florida and NFL football player threatened to shoot himself if anyone showed up at his house.

JSO said a witness reported hearing a gunshot inside Gaffney’s house before officers got there.

The JSO report said Gaffney told officers he "drank one drink and took two sleeping pills," denied wanting to kill himself, and said his girlfriend was "crazy."

First responders took him to a nearby Baker Act facility to protect him from potentially harming himself.

When Gaffney got there, JSO said he was sweating, told officers he felt sick, and vomited on the ground.

In July, Gaffney was accused of doing more than $1,000-worth of damage to a former teammate’s vehicle.

Court records show Gaffney pleaded not guilty to that charge on Thursday.

Gaffney has three other misdemeanor arrests since 2017, as well as a domestic violence injunction.
