JSO: One dead in Jacksonville Heights shooting

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrested Angelo Giardino III on Sunday and charged him with manslaughter in the shooting death of Michael Payton Hooks.

On Saturday around 10:15 p.m. officers responded to the 6000 block of Toyota Drive for a reported shooting, according to JSO.

Hooks was located in serious condition. He was transported to the hospital and later died from his injuries.

Giardino picked up a firearm that belonged to Hooks, pointed it at Hooks and pulled the trigger, not knowing that the gun was loaded, according to JSO.

“When the doorbell rang, I looked out the window and saw all the police cars, and I said, 'Oh my God,' so I came outside and they asked (if) I saw anything or heard anything," Monique Graham said.

Graham has lived on Toyota Drive in the Jacksonville Heights for 30 years.

“This is sad, this is really sad,” said Graham.

One neighbor didn’t want to be identified on camera. He lives around the corner from where the shooting happened, and after seeing a picture of the victim, he knew it was his friend.

“Payton was one of my great friends. We went to elementary school together and waking up and hearing such news like this kind of (hit) close to home,” he said.

Action News Jax also reached out to the victim’s grandmother who confirmed her grandson was killed Saturday night.

She posted a note on Facebook, saying "Rest In Peace Payton. Love Mema."

On Sunday morning, friends and family were also posting their condolences.

“I (am) just lost. I feel sorry for his family, for his parents and everything. It just doesn’t sit well with me at all,” said Payton’s friend.
