Jacksonville bicyclist hit and killed; driver not charged in crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — 11:56 a.m. UPDATE: The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced during a media briefing Wednesday morning that the bicyclist didn't stop at the ride light at the intersection of Phoenix Ave and Martin Luther King Jr Pkwy.

The bicyclist, a male, was run over by the tires of a semi-trailer and immediately killed.

JSO obtained video from a local business of the incident to help determine what exactly happened and to help find the semi involved in the accident.

The driver of the semi-truck was unaware at the time that a bicyclist had run into his truck.

10:46 a.m. UPDATE: The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has found the vehicle responsible in the death of the bicyclist. The driver said they were unaware of hitting someone. The driver will not be charged at this time, according to JSO.

Police said there have been 44 traffic fatalities and 23 murders in Jacksonville so far in 2018.

"The chance of being killed in a traffic fatality in Duval county is far greater than being murdered, yet nobody talks about it," JSO said in a Twitter post.
