JSO: Passenger who fled deadly crash found at hospital

DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. — One person was killed and nine others were injured in a crash involving a Jacksonville Transportation Authority bus Thursday morning.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the SUV crashed into a JTA bus just after 6:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Beach Boulevard and St. Johns Bluff Road.

The bus was getting ready to pull away from the bus stop at the time of the crash.

The bus driver went to check on the 54-year-old driver of the SUV, later identified by JSO as Eugene S. Kaligian. He started helping the man by performing CPR until help arrived, said JSO.

The SUV driver died from his injuries.

JSO said a passenger in the SUV was seen leaving the scene. Police later found that passenger at a local hospital where he was seeking treatment for injuries.

Police said 25 people were on the bus, and nine people were taken to multiple hospitals to receive treatment for minor injuries.

JTA spokeswoman Leigh Ann Rassler said, "I got a phone call and heard the news and immediately saddened to hear the news that someone passed away in the accident."

The lanes opened to traffic at 10 a.m.

JSO is continuing to investigate the crash.
