A large hole opened up on Beach Boulevard near Hodges Boulevard Wednesday afternoon.

It happened just before 2 p.m. in the eastbound right turn lane just before Falcon Ridge Pl.

The hole caught the attention of several drivers including Elle Mitchell who pulled over to get a closer look.

“I had get out of my car and check it out,” Mitchell said. “You see something like that you just got to get pictures of it and documentation.”

Neighbors tell Action News Jax Christy Turner that a hole had previously formed at the same spot, but was patched up poorly.

Drivers told Action News Jax that they were lucky to avoid the hole before crews arrived to put up cones.

JEA said the affected area was a drain on a Florida Department of Transportation road, not a sewer line.

Drivers could be seen leaving their cars at the scene to take photos of the damage.

FDOT sent this statement: "The outside right turn lane on Beach Boulevard (U.S. 90) at Falcon Ridge (auxiliary turn lane to the Wolf Creek Community) is currently seeing an extended lane closure due to a void in the roadway.

"The three through lanes on Beach Boulevard are not expected to see closures at this time."
