Local homeless shelters raising capacity in response to freezing Christmas temperatures

JACKSONVILLE, Fla, — People across Northeast Florida in need of shelter are trying to keep warm this Christmas with shelters attempting to keep up.

Sulzbacher is one of many shelters increasing capacity in response to the historic freezing temperatures.

Sulzbacher has stated it will provide cold night shelter for the next several days, opening temporary sleeping areas in its dining areas for people in need of shelter during these frigid evenings.

This location is one of many locations, as City Rescue Mission also announced last week that as long as temperatures remain below 40 degrees, they will increase capacity.

Some in the homeless community are still struggling to get into shelters during this time and doing their best to stay warm with what they have.

Action News Jax spoke to a man who is trying to do his best to stay positive through it all.

“What am I doing to stay warm? The best I can.” the man said.

“It is so important to stay positive.”

Sulzbacher says women and families seeking shelter from the cold can find it at Sulzbacher Village at 5455 Springfield Blvd, while men can come to the Downtown campus at 611 East Adam St.
