Local woman shares traumatic experience to bring awareness to drunken driving

A local woman is taking to social media to bring awareness to the issue of drunken driving.

In a Facebook post, the woman, Marie Cochran wrote, "To the Drunk Driver that hit us and all those that have consumed alcohol and gotten behind the driver's seat of a car I want you to know what your 'I'm Sorry' can do," before describing, in detail, the horror her family members experienced after they were hit by a drunken driver.

Cochran said the driver who hit her family's vehicle, "stumbled out of his car heavily intoxicated, saying he was, “Sorry'.” His actions caused a five-vehicle pileup, she wrote.

"'Sorry' didn’t unpin my child from the back seat, 'Sorry' didn’t calm my baby girl as she screamed in fear from the blood that poured out her mouth and 'Sorry' didn’t help my son get pulled out (of) our crushed car," Cochran wrote.

In the post, the woman goes on to thank the people she calls "responsible adults" who helped her during the traumatic event.

"Thank you to the other RESPONSIBLE GENTLEMAN who heard the collision from his house and ran over. Thank you to the RESPONSIBLE First Responders: #FireRescue and #JSO officers that helped us get our babies to the hospital. Thank you to the Navy Sailor that came to my side," Cochran wrote.

Cochran wrote the Facebook post with the intention of saving other families and to make those who  get behind the wheel while under the influence to think twice about their actions.

"You could have killed my entire family and 'I'm sorry' wouldn't have helped at all. #DontDrinkandDrive," she wrote.

The post has received over  400 likes, over 200 comments, and has been shared nearly 200 times.
