Look inside Jax Beach Police Department patrols on 4th of July

Thousands made their way to the beaches to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday.

“This is all about family, fun, beach,” said beachgoer Patrick Lockley. "And remember what the Fourth is all about!”

Action News Jax reporter Ryan Nelson rode along with Jacksonville Beach Officer Tony Carrillo this afternoon.

Within minutes of getting in the cruiser, they were off to 1st Street in response to a shoplifting call that escalated to a fight. Carrillo told us the suspect was let off with a warning and banned from the store.

He says the Fourth is a very busy day for officers, with many calls and large crowds.

“The later it gets more people will be coming in,” he said.

He tells us many people at the beach will be under the influence. With alcohol flowing and heavy vehicle traffic in the area, he says safety is top of mind for officers.

Action News Jax told you this weekend two people were hit in Jacksonville Beach last weekend.

Carrillo says they will close 1st Street down tonight if it’s no longer considered safe.

“It’s safe,” said Carrillo. “Cross where you’re supposed to cross. Don’t try and run out in front of traffic or beat a car coming across or anything like that.”

If you plan on watching fireworks at the beach, the festivities begin at 9 p.m. You’re encouraged to arrive early.
