Man dies two weeks after being hit by softball in Nocatee

A softball player from the Tampa area has died -- two weeks after he was struck in the head during a tournament at Davis Park in St. Johns County.

Greg Fusco, 37, of Palm Harbor, died on Dec. 17, according to a St. Johns County Sheriff's Office report. The accident happened on Dec. 2.

Fusco was initially knocked unconscious when he was struck in the face by a line drive and was flown to UF Health. He was hit in the left temple, police said.

Fusco came to after being hit, and the police report classified his injury as "non-life threatening."

There was no official cause of death at this time. A St. Johns County Sheriff's Office report indicated that Fusco had a recent head injury prior to being struck by the ball.

A Facebook page maintained by International Slow Pitch Softball stated that they would insitute a new rule, called the Greg Fusco Rule, requiring pitchers to wear face protection.
