Police rescued a man who jumped into the St. Johns River during Tropical Storm Ian

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. — Green Cove Springs police department officers were called to rescue a man who nearly drowned in the St. Johns River.

At around 12:43 p.m. on Sept. 29, officers responded to 1063 Bulkhead Rd., Pier #2 after a report came in of a 67-year-old man seen jumping into the St. Johns River during Tropical Storm Ian.

As officers arrived only two minutes after being dispatched, they were able to locate the man. He was unconscious in the water.

Cmdr. Hines, Sgt. Vineyard and Sgt. Chris Glenn from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and detective Patterson began assisting in the recovery efforts. A bystander along with Sgt. Glenn jumped into the water to assist.

The man was immediately brought to shore where life saving measures were performed by officer Newton and Sgt. Vineyard until Clay County Fire Rescue continued medical attention.

The man was transported to a local hospital where he has been listed in critical condition.
