Man shot multiple times in back outside Southside Jacksonville hotel

Update on July 5: David Winn McPheeters, 33, was arrested in connection to a shooting at a Jacksonville hotel on July 1. Action News received the arrest report on July 5.

Original story:

A man is recovering after being shot multiple times at outside a Southside Jacksonville hotel.

Jacksonville police said they have a person of interest in that shooting, which happened Saturday morning in the parking lot of Hawthorn Suites on Baymeadows Road.

Officers told Action News Jax reporter Kevin Clark there were a lot of people staying at the hotel this weekend.

JSO said the victim was shot three to five times while running away from the shooter.

There were reportedly a lot of people around at the time of the shooting. Police were able to get the tag number of the alleged shooter's car from a witness.

Officers said they tracked the number to a man down at his house a half mile from the hotel.

The man is now a person of interest.

Officers said a shooting in a crowded hotel parking lot was worrisome to them.

“My initial concern is that there is a lot of innocent people at this hotel. As a matter of fact, there is a lot of young people staying here because of a softball tournament here in Jacksonville,” JSO Sgt. Rob Beers said.

The victim who was staying at the hotel is expected to survive.

Police said they believe the victim and shooter knew each other.
