• Woman pulls over on Mathews Bridge after "smelling 300-year-old Bible," calls JFRD

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - UPDATE JULY 8 AT 9:42 AM: 

    The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a suspicious package on the Mathews Bridge on Friday, July 5. 

    When officers arrived they met with JFRD and were advised that a patient was feeling sick after "smelling a 300-year-old Bible."

    The patient said she recenty purchased the bible over the internet and had it shipped to the post office on Spring Park Road.

    She said that as she was travelling across the Mathews Bridge when she started smelling something coming from the package. Then she felt naseaus, she said.

    She pulled over and called JFRD, police say.

    WHAT WE KNOW: 

    • JSO told local news stations it would be holding a briefing at 3 p.m.; the briefing was moved to 4 p.m. after a 30 minute delay.
    • The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department initially responded to a female motorist in distress in the 5300 block of the Arlington Expressway. 
    • According to police, the woman picked up a package she'd ordered online and was concerned the package caused her medical episode.
    • The package was given the all clear by JSO.
    • The woman was checked out by JFRD, according to JSO. 
    • JSO said they are not sure what caused the womans medical issue.
    • The Mathews Bridge is now open.
