Metro Diner reopens after car crashes into restaurant

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It took 11 days, but Metro Diner in San Marco is officially open just in time for Easter weekend.

People flocked Saturday to the restaurant when it opened at 6:30 a.m. The menu featured specials like fried green tomato eggs Benedict and the Oscar omelet.

On April 9, an off-duty police office lost control of his car and crashed into the side of the restaurant.

The owner of Metro Diner told Action News Jax the JSO officer swerved to miss a car that was crossing Hendricks Avenue.

The owner told us the officer lost control and crashed into the restaurant. No one was hurt, but the restaurant was forced to close as it repaired the damage. This time, the patio furniture was replaced and a guard rail added utside to prevent future damage to the building.

Ruth Painter-Sepia has lived in the area since 1977 and was excited that Metro Diner back open.

"I ordered the Oscar omelet, the crab Oscar, with asparagus, and it was delicious. It's just the community coming together, there’s a togetherness in there that’s like family," said Painter-Sepia.
