Neighbors in Orange Park believe mail carrier was stealing their mail

ORANGE PARK, Fla. — Neighbors in a Clay County community are upset after they noticed someone had been stealing their mail.

Now the United States Post Office is investigating one of their own as a potential suspect.

Several people in an Orange Park community commented on a neighborhood Facebook group, and they took it upon themselves to try and find out who the thief was.

Bonnie Upright is the administrator of the neighborhood group.

She said many people who live nearby were complaining of certain items being taken out of their mailbox or never being delivered at all.

"There was ... clearly more than one person (who) had an issue with items being taken out of their mail. They weren't getting, you know, gift cards, birthday cards, things like that," Upright said.

She said for some people over a few week span, their mail seemed to have vanished.

They didn't believe it was a typical porch pirate who was responsible but instead thought it was the person delivering the mail.

"You know the mail is one of those things you always hear -- it's a felony, it's a punishable offense, right to (intercept) the mail," Upright said.

Action News Jax reached out to the United States Postal Service, and a spokesperson said that they were aware of the concern, but wouldn't confirm any details.

USPS said it launched an immediate investigation and added that, "This type of alleged behavior within the Postal Service is not tolerated."
