People at the Franklin Street Apartments are mourning the loss of their neighbor after he was killed in a dog attack on Friday.

Police have still not released an identification but neighbors said the victim was an elderly man who lived in the apartments.

“He was such a sweet man,” said Deborah Young. “You couldn’t have asked for a better neighbor.”

The apartments back up to a home in the 1100 block of Jessie Street.

On Friday, police found the man’s body along the backyard fence of the home near the dumpsters where neighbors take their trash.

The Medical Examiner and Jacksonville's Animal Care and Protective Services responded to the scene and four dogs were seized.

Investigators said it looks like the dogs could have gotten through the fence.

Witnesses told Action News Jax the dogs left the yard and pulled the man back in, where he died.

The dogs’ owner, Lephus Felton, has defended the animals since the incident.

He said the dogs are well-trained and the man was antagonizing them.

“He was antagonizing my dogs,” said Felton. “I got signs and everything that say, ‘Beware of dogs.’ Everybody out here knows about my dogs.”

Neighbors we spoke to said the dogs were always aggressive.

“They lunged at me a few times, but I kind of hurried up and got away from the fence,” said Young.

Neighbors are holding a candlelight vigil for the victim Saturday evening.
