New commercial, retail, and office space could be coming to Gate Parkway & Burnt Mill Road

Jacksonville’s Southside is a hotbed for new development. It seems that, everywhere you look, there's something new popping up.

Now, there could be new development close to the town center on Gate Parkway and Burnt Mill Road.

Action News Jax's Courtney Cole is taking you to the site to give you a closer look at what you can expect in the future.

“I definitely like the idea of new development coming to Jacksonville in general, especially with this area, having so much land and people actually starting to put more business and stuff out here,” said Chris Herring, who lives in the area.

The Skinner family and Nouveau Management have submitted an application to the city of Jacksonville to propose rezoning 15.44 acres of property in the northwest quadrant of Gate Parkway and Burnt Mill Road for mixed use.

While this area is mostly dirt and sand right now, developers are planning to build more home and businesses on that side of Gate Parkway.

As you can see on the site map, there are plans to build three commercial-retail office buildings.

Retail will be on the ground floor and office space will be on the second floor in buildings 1, 2, and 3, as pictured in the rendering.

There will also be storage for personal property, as well as space for public buildings and facilities on the northern part of the property.

One woman said it's going to be great for the economy, but it will create problems for commuters.

Cole asked, “How does the sound of new development make you feel?”

“Exhausted! It is so congested right now, I can’t even imagine more and more businesses coming in this area,” said Timberly Miller. She said she works and lives in the area.

Although everyone  Cole spoke with said they're dreading the potential traffic woes, they said they wouldn't choose to live and work anywhere else.

"It’s just the price you pay for living in a beautiful state like Florida,” Miller said.

Public hearings for the new development are set to take place next month with the Jacksonville Planning Commission and City Council.
