ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - St. Augustine is now home to two distilleries.

The grand opening of City Gate Spirits, on St. George Street, is this Saturday Oct. 12.

It was named after the city's original gates that sit just steps away.

Surrounded by history, including the Castillo de San Marcos just across the street, it's no wonder you feel like you're stepping back in time.

CEO and co-founder, Philip McDaniel said it's all about the experience.

"A lot of consumers now want to get things that [are] unique," said McDaniel.

And that starts with the spirit.

Director of production Rick de Montmollin took the Action News Jax cameras to the back where the distilling, blending, and labeling happen.

There's one product that's never been done in St. Augustine.

"Apple Pie Moonshine. The first legally distilled moonshine in St. Augustine," said de Montmollin.

McDaniel didn't spare any detail, even down to the labels on the bottles which resemble old postcards.

City Gate Spirits is not just a cocktail creator but also a job creator.

The business added three full-time employees and up to eight part-time positions. With Nights of Lights just around the corner, the distillery will likely need more hands on deck.

"We have a pretty strong base of locals, but then we have all these visitors that come in. I think the intersection of those two economies allows businesses more success," said McDaniel.

The first 50 visitors to show up Saturday will receive a gift card with a surprise value of up to $100.

Visitors will also be entered to win a free overnight staycation at The St. George Inn which includes a $100 gift card for a popular local restaurant and passes to local attractions.
