Northeast Florida leaders inspect dune systems after Dorian

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Jacksonville City Councilman Rory Diamond and St. Johns County Commissioner Jeremiah Blocker flew in a St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office helicopter Wednesday afternoon to inspect local dune systems after Hurricane Dorian.

“So Commissioner Jeremiah Blocker and I both represent beach communities out here in northeast Florida,” said Diamond. “So we were doing an aerial inspection of our dune system and our beaches.”

They tell Action News Jax the dune systems in Duval County appear to be doing well, but the same couldn’t be said for St. Johns County beaches.

“We really want to make sure those beaches are protected and our residents have the best protection necessary as we continue to go through an active hurricane season,” said Blocker. “That’s going to be critical going forward.”

Blocker says there’s an active effort to bring in money to rebuild what was lost in past hurricanes. Many communities, like Vilano Beach, have struggled with erosion.

“We need to continue to identify local funding sources and match it with state and federal funding,” said Blocker. "So there is danger there for the homes and residents that we need to address.”
