DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. — Every week, Action News Jax investigates local child care centers to show you how they measure up to state guidelines. In this week’s Kid Care report, Letisha Bereola shows us two facilities: One with a record of clean inspections and the other with an issue with seat belts.
Right Start Early Learning Center in Atlantic Beach was one of the latest stops for a routine inspector for the Department of Children and Families. It was tagged with four violations.
The first was a class 2 violation, which -- according to the state -- could pose a threat to the safety and health of a child. The company van had two broken seat belts, according to the inspector. Anchor Letisha Bereola paid the learning center a visit to ask the director if repairs were made, but no one came to the door.
The inspector did note the center called the van's manufacturer to get the seat belts fixed.
The other violations were class 3 violations, which -- the state says pose a low risk of harm to kids.
Those violations were for training, record-keeping, and for not having its license displayed.
Bereola's calls to the center were also not returned.
Future Duck Early Learning Center on Golfair Boulevard was violation- free during its routine inspection.
"Your last six inspections have been clean. How do you feel about that?," Bereola asked Director Natasha Gillis, of Future Duck Early Learning Center.
"Great, it’s an awesome feeling. It’s good to have a wonderful day care, and it’s all about the children," Gillis replied.
The last time the center had a violation was in May of 2017.
That inspection report said the center dropped three children off to a person who was not on the enrollment form as an authorized person, which is a class 2 violation.
Bereola asked Gillis how have things changed since then, to which she replied, "It was definitely straightened out. From this point on, we make sure we have everything in writing.”
