One-of-a-kind indoor sports facility planned for St. Johns County

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — It's a one-stop shop for parents to take their kids to sports practice, or at least that's the goal behind an indoor sports facility in St. Johns County.

A family's home, empty barns and open fields are all the 46-acre plot of land houses right now, but it will soon be the site of a massive indoor sports complex called Project Family.

Local mother Candie Ibaka tells ActionNewsJax, "As a new parent, I think it's a great idea."

To her, the idea of having an indoor sports complex close by for her daughter to go to is exciting. "Sounds good. Sounds like a win for the area."

Only ActionNewsJax got the renderings that show the vision for the state-of-the-art facility. It will have everything from indoor track and volleyball courts to treadmills for parents wanting to keep an eye on their kids.

Luis Fernandez, who lives in St. Johns County, says, "I think it's pretty awesome to have it here."

The plot of land where this 175,000-square-foot facility will be is right off of Race Track Road between I-95 and 9b. The hope is that this complex will give parents in the St. Johns County area another option to get their children active.

"I think it's amazing. I mean, it's pretty awesome just to have something locally that's close enough, so that way we don't have to drive across town from one end to the other side," adds Fernandez.

Project Family is hoping to get all its permits approved by the end of this year so construction can start by 2020. The group tells ActionNewsJax that this facility will bring 100+ full and part-time jobs to the area. It is also looking at providing transportation from local schools to the facility once it opens.
