Orange Park woman dies after accident in apartment gym

ORANGE PARK, Fla. — According to a police report, on Jan. 28, Tonya Anthony was working out at the Kensley Apartment gym in Orange Park when she died.

The police report said, "While hanging from the bar, Ms. Anthony began doing leg lifts and began flipping around on the bar.

The bar broke free, and she fell straight back to the floor. It appeared that Ms. Anthony's head and upper body struck an elliptical machine and her lower body and legs struck the treadmill."

Anthony, 42, was found unconscious and taken to Shands Medical Center where she died 11 days later.

Angel Johnson was shocked to hear about what happened.

"Does that make you think twice about working out today?” asked Action News reporter Ben Becker.

“Definitely. Oh, my. Makes me think 10 times. Go to Powerhouse Gym or something. Oh, my goodness," Johnson said.

Bell Partners, who manages the Kensley Apartments sent Action News a statement that reads in part. "We are deeply saddened by Ms. Anthony’s accidental death, which apparently occurred as a result of injuries she sustained from a fall in the community’s fitness center. We are fully cooperating with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Department at this time.”

Action News reporter Ben Becker spoke with Tonya's fiancé by phone. He didn't want to do an interview. But he said it’s been a difficult time losing the love of his life.

He is looking for legal representation.
