'Overlay' gas pump skimmer found at Columbia County station

VIDEO: Shopper catches two thieves installing a gas skimmer

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office said a credit card skimmer was located at an unnamed station located off I-10 west of Jacksonville.

The device is called an "overlay skimmer," and its designed to mimic the appearance of a card reader at the gas pumps.

Deputies advise consumers to pay close attention to the plastic surrounding the card reader. A skimmer device may have newer plastic or plastic with a different texture, they said.

A 2017 report from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services show 613 skimmers were found at pumps

In 2016, there were 219 skimmers located.
