Parents, educators talk armed employees in Putnam County Schools

Parents and educators are reacting to a proposed plan to arm Putnam County school employees.

Last Wednesday we told you about the plan, which would train the employees, making them “special deputies.”

Public comment was deeply divided at Tuesday evening’s school board meeting.

One mother told the board her daughter was scared of her teacher possibly having a gun.

“I do think someone needs to go back to the drawing board, and come up with someone else,” she said.

Another said that having more armed educators is a smart way to keep children safe.

“If you will all look at the statistics, you will see that these mass shootings and other killings happen only in gun free zones,” she said.

Tuesday was the first time board members were able to discuss the proposal with each other.

The board’s plan is to announce a workshop to discuss the proposal further.
