Action News Jax was at the neighborhood on Jacksonville's northside where police had a pond taped off.
A woman in the neighborhood told Action News Jax reporter Amber Krycka that she helped pull a little girl from the pond and started performing CPR.
The woman says she is a nurse.
“I was just praying and asking the Lord to bring her back. She’s too young, she’s just a baby, she’s just a baby,” said Jennette Atkins-Jones, a nurse who tried to help.
Atkins-Jones said she did everything she could to help a drowning 4-year-old girl. And as a nurse, she knew what to do.
“Kept pumping, kept pumping, I knew the more you pumped the better chance she has,” said Atkins-Jones.
Just minutes before, the nurse said she noticed a grandmother looking for her granddaughter near Moose Creek Court. Seconds later, she said she heard screams coming from the pond, across the street from the neighborhood park.
“I took off and ran. My husband came. The grandmother was in the pond with the baby, I yelled for her to give us the baby,” said Atkins-Jones.
Atkins-Jones said she performed CPR on the little girl for several minutes until paramedics arrived.
“I just kept pumping and pumping and pumping and praying that she would just show some kind of sign,” she said.
The girl was rushed to the hospital where police said she died.
“I feel helpless because I couldn’t bring her back, couldn’t bring her back,” she said.
For several hours, police had the pond blocked off, as they took pictures and talked to neighbors. Just a couple of blocks away, a home taped off with crime tape – police believe that’s where the little girl lived.
When JSO gave a briefing at 7:15 p.m., they said they were still working to talk to the family to figure out what exactly happened. They are also working to review the neighborhood video surveillance.
