Police looking for people responsible for firing several shots in busy Jacksonville shopping area

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office continues to look for those responsible for firing several shots in a busy shopping plaza Sunday afternoon.

“In the back of my mind, I’m worrying: Is someone going to shoot,” said Swannetta McCray, a shopper.

It’s a reasonable fear after several shots were fired in a parking lot off Beach Boulevard near Hodges Boulevard.

“That’s scary because we shop here all the time, and thought this was a safe area,” McCray said.

Before the gunfire, police said, there was some kind of argument. As bullets were flying, dozens of people were grabbing lunch or getting a haircut.

“Next thing I know my wife says, 'Hey he’s pulling out a gun,' and I said, 'Let’s get down, get down on the floor.' Then all I heard were shots bam, bam, bam, bam,” said Tom Medlock, a witness.

Thankfully, no one was hurt, but several cars and businesses, including Nothing Bundt Cakes, were hit by bullets.

The shop was closed for most of the day as employees cleaned up shattered glass. Detectives were seen talking to business owners and employees.

“Hopefully, it’s an isolated incident. It’s very scary,” said Jeanne Mahomey, a shopper.

An employee told Action News Jax he got video of a van he believes was involved speeding off.
