Police: Man shot at least three times in Fernandina Beach

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — Right now, officers are looking for whoever shot a man at least three times in Fernandina Beach.

The family of Ernest Roberts Jr. shared a photo of him with Action News Jax.  His wife said he’s in a Jacksonville hospital doing well.

Fernandina Beach police said there have been two shootings in their city in the last two years.

“I don’t ever recall too many shootings here,” said Mary Wright, who has lived here since 1986.  “It’s a quiet neighborhood.”

Police said that, early Sunday morning, someone shot Roberts least three times while he was walking home near Jasmine and South 13th streets.

Officers said the shooting happened just feet from a church and a day care near the Barnabas parking lot.

“It is scary,” Wright said.  “We don’t like to hear that.”

Officers said Roberts was flown to a Jacksonville hospital then, with serious injuries.

So far, officers haven’t given any information on a motive or suspect.

“That’s sad to hear that it’s in our community,” Wright said.  “We go to church here and we don’t like to hear things like that in our community.”
