JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. - Jacksonville Beach Police said a 9-year-old girl was bitten on the right leg at the knee by what is believed to have been a shark Wednesday afternoon.
According to the incident report, the bite left several cuts on the child’s leg which could result in the need for surgery.
The child was taken to Wolfson Children’s Hospital for treatment.
Surfer Clayton Hodge said he saw the rescue effort while he was working nearby.
“I seen the lifeguard and the ambulance and the fire trucks going down there,” Hodge said.
"There was a group I believe and they carried her up to a house that was near there,” Jax Beach Ocean Rescue Captain Rob Emahiser said.
Emahiser said while they do have lifeguards on duty throughout the beach, there was not a lifeguard working where the child was swimming.
"It's always a good idea to swim near a lifeguard,” Emahiser said. “They're going to be the first guy to see something. They have a height advantage up on the tower."
Action News Jax obtained cell phone video showing what appears to be sharks swimming in Jax Beach Thursday.
Emahiser said this is the second suspected shark bite in Jax Beach so far this year.
