Shots fired into apartment while children slept on Jacksonville's Northside

A local grandmother says she’s afraid for the lives of her grandchildren after dozens of gunshots were fired around her Waters Edge apartment complex Tuesday night.

“I’m so happy they are OK,” said Sharon Brown.

It’s all smiles and hugs for Brown as she holds her grandkids closely. But there was nothing to smile about Tuesday night.

“I heard a loud, gunshots, back to back to back,” she said.

Brown was sleeping on the couch with her three grandkids when she woke up to gunfire.

“So I jumped up, started grabbing the grandkids and running,” Brown said.

Two bullets flew into her home. One shattered the sliding glass door, just feet away from where they were sleeping. And another bullet went through this window into the children’s bedroom.

“I was dripping in sweat, I was, I really was,” said Brown.

Bullets went into two others apartments, and at least two cars were hit.

“Yeah, last night scared the hell out of me,” said Patrice Fallen, a neighbor.

Neighbors say shots are fired all the time in the area, but Tuesday night was different.

“At least, at least 40 shots,” Fallen said.

A carefree place for play was disturbed by the harsh realities of life.

“It was very intense. I can hear it now, back to back, real loud. It was like they in here, but wasn’t,” said Brown.
