Action News Jax has spoken to four sources who say the Jacksonville company laid of at least 61 workers today. Saft’s latest filings with the city of Jacksonville show it employs 233 workers.
Sources say this is phase one in what could be a series of layoffs.
In 2009, Saft America signed a deal for $5.3 million in city incentives if it created 279 local jobs by 2016.
It accepted $2.7 million of that deal but only created 181 jobs.
Saft was given an extension to the end of this year to meet it's goal but was fined $25,000.
Saft America makes advanced lithium batteries and was touted by President Barack Obama during his visit to Jacksonville as a manufacturing sucess back in 2016.
